Why I think it's important to have conversations about sexuality with the little human beings in our life.

The first workshop in my Approachable Adult Zoom Workshop Spring Series starts April 18 and the focus is on the preschoolers and young children.

Perhaps some folks may be curious as to why the topic of sexuality would start with the young humans in our lives.  Well, have you spent any time with a preschooler or any child between the ages of 3 and 8?  If you have you already know why …

·       Because one of the most asked question of these littles are “Why?”  They are so curious and want to know everything about their little world around them.  And they want to know everything about their “bums” “poop” and “pee.”  I like to answer all their questions using all the correct scientific terms such as “buttocks” “scat” (oh whoops that’s bear poop), I mean “stool” and “urine.”  Kids love learning the science behind their world.  And I LOVE talking about Body Science from head (and the brain) to the tippy toes and of course private parts.

·       Because little kids love exploring their bodies.  And they love to show off their bodies too!  Since my kid turned about 4, I think I’ve seen more private parts at home then at work … and I’m a nurse!!!  And this is all very normal and healthy in the right context.  It’s important at this age to start talking about boundaries.  Not only does this protect the littles from uncomfortable touch, but also this is when the topic of consent really starts.

·       Kids are the world’s best observers and they watch every move.  They particularly watch every move grown-ups make.  This is a good time to take stock of your own values and model behaviour based on these values, as kids will follow suit.

Join me at my Zoom session and learn how to put a positive spin to sexuality.  This is not an easy feat for some grown ups as we all have experiences that may have negatively impacted our idea of sexuality.  Trust me, I know.  I’ve been there.  However, since caring for a child I am determined to bring a more positive spin to their idea of sexuality; and since my journey began, my idea of sexuality has brightened.  And I’d like to share my ideas and insights with you!
